Feed Adjustments

• Standard feeding rates apply — approximately 1/4 pound of layer feed per standard bird per day
• Adjust seasonally: slightly increase feed in winter, slightly reduce in summer heat
• Provide oyster shell free-choice for calcium supplementation
• Offer scratch grains as an occasional treat — no more than 10% of total diet

Housing Tips

• Standard coop: 4 square feet per bird inside, 10 square feet per bird in the run
• Adjustable ventilation — open more in summer, reduce (but never close completely) in winter
• Roost height of 2-4 feet with a droppings board underneath for easy cleaning
• One nesting box per 3-4 hens, placed lower than the highest roost
• Predator-proof hardware cloth on all openings (not chicken wire)
• Extra ventilation in subtropical humidity prevents respiratory issues

Seasonal Care

• Spring: Peak laying season. Perform a thorough coop cleaning. Start parasite prevention program. Enjoy the highest egg production of the year.
• Summer: Ensure shade and ventilation. Watch for heat stress on the hottest days. Provide extra water. Egg production may dip slightly in extreme heat.
• Fall: Annual molt — feathers shed and regrow. Increase protein to 20%. Egg production drops temporarily. Prepare coop for cooler weather.
• Winter: Shorter days reduce egg production. Supplemental lighting (14-16 hours total) helps maintain laying. Increase feed slightly. Ensure water doesn't freeze on cold nights.
